Is digital art Real?

We’ve all heard that many times - digital art can’t be real as it hasn’t been born on the canvas or paper during long hours of creating process in the most messy and artistic studio imaginable. It doesn’t have the feel and texture that only paints can give and it’s not really “hand drawn”, in fact you don’t get dirty hands at all while drawing, so… what’s the point? :)

And I get it, really. I also love the smell of oil paints in the air and printmaking was always my favourite during the happiest student days. But I also found it very frustrating when my painstakingly drawn illustrations came up so differently on the screen after scanning and I had to spend many more hours fixing all the issues. And what if a client requests a small change? Like adding another girl to the scene…

This is where digital drawing comes so handy. You can easily make any changes and believe me - there are plenty of those while creating a picture book. Adding or removing characters from the illustration is fairly easy and doesn’t generate more hours of work in my busy schedule. Preparing for print is also less complicated and the final effect more predictable.

But more importantly, digital drawing is still fun!

… and doesn’t have to look artificial ;-)
